Ankle Sprains Explained

An ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments that support the ankle are stretched or torn. This commonly happens when the foot rolls outward or inward, causing the ankle to twist beyond its normal range. Ankle sprains can happen during exercise, walking on uneven ground, or stepping awkwardly. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and difficulty putting weight on the foot. Some people also notice weakness or a feeling that the ankle may give way.

Several factors can increase the risk of an ankle sprain. Previous ankle injuries can make the joint less stable, while poor balance can make an awkward step more likely. Uneven surfaces, wearing improper footwear, and quick direction changes can also contribute. A podiatrist can evaluate the ankle and determine the severity of the injury. Treatment may include rest, compression, and recommendations for activity changes.

Ankle sprains are commonly classified into three grades. A grade 1 sprain involves mild stretching or microscopic ligament damage and usually causes limited swelling and tenderness. Healing may take about one to two weeks. A grade 2 sprain involves a partial ligament tear and can cause swelling, bruising, and difficulty walking. Recovery may take several weeks. A grade 3 sprain involves a complete ligament tear and may cause significant pain, instability, and difficulty bearing weight. Healing can take several weeks to months, depending on the injury and treatment.

A podiatrist may use a physical examination and imaging tests to check for a fracture or other problem. The treatment plan may include a brace or walking boot for protection, followed by a gradual return to activity as the ankle heals. Proper support can help reduce reinjury risk. If you have sprained your ankle, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist for effective relief and treatment solutions.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.
