Walking Breaks During Work

It is well documented that working on the feet throughout the workday can put the feet at risk of developing some kind of affliction or condition, especially if they are not being taken care of. However, in addition to working on the feet all day, individuals who sit down at a desk for the majority of the workday can also pose risks to their feet. These office workers might be reducing the extent to which their feet can facilitate good blood circulation when they sit all day at the desk. To prevent this, an office worker might consider going on brief walks throughout the day to keep the feet and body engaged and in motion. The proven benefits associated with taking brief walking breaks are considerable. If you have questions or want to improve balancing work and your foot health, consider contacting a podiatrist today.

While working on the feet, it is important to take the proper care of them. For more information about working on your feet, contact Amir Shalev, DPM from Complete Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Facts About Ankle Replacement

Ankle replacement surgery is a last resort to eliminating severe pain, stiffness, and inflammation caused by arthritis. This procedure is usually considered only after less-invasive measures, such as arthroscopic debridement and ankle fusion, have been dismissed. There are many risks involved with ankle replacement surgery, including infection, nerve damage, and blood clots. Additionally, there is a chance of misalignment of the bones involved, as well as risks related to age and other underlying medical conditions. The procedure replaces parts of the affected bones with plastic or metal pieces. It is usually recommended only for someone who can barely move their ankle. Recovery from this surgery may include wearing a cast or protective boot and taking prescription pain medication. The ability to bear weight on the ankle will improve very slowly, and recovery may take four months or longer. The new ankle joint is expected to last for about 10 years. For more information on ankle replacement surgery or to see if you qualify, please consult a podiatrist.

What Can Cause Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome?

The tibial nerve connects the back of the leg to the inner ankle. Tarsal tunnel syndrome occurs when this nerve becomes pinched and can happen if an injury has occurred. It may also develop if a surrounding tendon becomes inflamed, or from rolling the ankle inward while running. Common symptoms that are generally associated with tarsal tunnel syndrome often include a soreness in the arch or sole of the foot, and the affected area may tingle or become numb. Temporary relief may be found when supportive shoes, custom made orthotics, or arch supports are worn. If you have pain in this part of your foot, it is strongly suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can determine what the cause is, and offer correct treatment techniques.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome can be very uncomfortable to live with. If you are experiencing tarsal tunnel syndrome, contact Amir Shalev, DPM of Complete Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome, which can also be called tibial nerve dysfunction, is an uncommon condition of misfiring peripheral nerves in the foot. The tibial nerve is the peripheral nerve in the leg responsible for sensation and movement of the foot and calf muscles. In tarsal tunnel syndrome, the tibial nerve is damaged, causing problems with movement and feeling in the foot of the affected leg.

Common Cause of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Involves pressure or an injury, direct pressure on the tibial nerve for an extended period of time, sometimes caused by other body structures close by or near the knee.
  • Diseases that damage nerves, including diabetes, may cause tarsal tunnel syndrome.
  • At times, tarsal tunnel syndrome can appear without an obvious cause in some cases.

The Effects of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Different sensations, an afflicted person may experience pain, tingling, burning or other unusual sensations in the foot of the affected leg.
  • The foot muscles, toes and ankle become weaker, and curling your toes or flexing your foot can become difficult.
  • If condition worsens, infections and ulcers may develop on the foot that is experiencing the syndrome.

A physical exam of the leg can help identify the presence of tarsal tunnel syndrome. Medical tests, such as a nerve biopsy, are also used to diagnose the condition. Patients may receive physical therapy and prescriptive medication. In extreme cases, some may require surgery.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.
